Greenville, SC – 3/12/2024 – Greenville Water, in partnership with the South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), will execute a prescribed fire spanning 100 acres on Hogback Mountain Wednesday, March 13.
The prescribed fire was meticulously planned in collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders and serves a crucial role in promoting ecosystem health, reducing the risk of wildfires and protecting the watershed.
By clearing out accumulated vegetation and promoting natural regeneration, the burn helps maintain the biodiversity of the area while mitigating the threat of catastrophic wildfires. Hogback Mountain is not only a vital ecological site but also hosts critical infrastructure including the WSPA TV tower and Duke Energy power lines.
Preparation for the prescribed fire began during the Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) in November 2023. This proactive approach ensures the effective management of the burn and minimized the risk of uncontrolled fire spread.
