Engineering - Cross Connection Control

For the most current policy on cross connection control click here.

The main function of the Cross Connection Control Program is to eliminate the possibility of contamination within our system. Cross connection occurs whenever a public water supply has an actual or potential connection with any other source or system that could result in unintended potable water being introduced. In order to protect the potable public water supply, appropriate backflow prevention devices need to be in place for facilities like car washes, funeral homes, doctors’ offices, restaurants, schools, and dry cleaners. For a list of approved backflow prevention devices, see South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Review of fireline plans and inspection of fireline installations are an integral part of this program. The program staff is responsible for overseeing the backflow prevention device inspection program, reviewing fire line plans, and inspecting fire line installations. The following procedure is used for approval of fireline plans and establishing a fireline account:

  1. Submit hard copy plans or email a PDF of plans depicting the general site plan (including detail of underground fireline piping) and one copy of inside sprinkler detail with material sheet to bfp@greenvillewater.com.
  2. GW reviews plans and may ask for revisions.
  3. After approval, the drawings are marked “Approved.”
  4. The facility owner must sign a fireline contract and pay the appropriate tap fees.
  5. Fireline pit is inspected by GW.
  6. Tap is made by GW upon approval of fireline pit construction and piping.
