Cross Connection Control

Cross Connection Control staff work to eliminate the possibility of contamination within the system.  They oversee the backflow prevention device inspection program.  They also review fire line plans and inspect fire line installations, which are integral parts of the Cross Connection Control Program.

Cross connection means any actual or potential connection or structural arrangement between a public water supply and any other source or system through which it is possible to introduce into any part of the potable system any used water, industrial fluid, gas or substance other than the intended potable water with which the system is supplied. The main function of the Cross Connection Control Program is to eliminate the possibility of contamination within our system. In order to protect the potable public water supply, appropriate backflow prevention devices need to be in place for the following types of facilities:

  • Car washes
  • Funeral homes
  • Health clinics
  • Doctors
  • Dentists
  • Veterinarians
  • Chiropractors
  • Lawn sprinklers
  • Restaurants
  • Dry cleaners
  • Hair salons or barbers
  • Photo processing labs
  • Chemical facilities
  • Public swimming pools
  • Laundromats
  • Chemical plating facilities
  • Schools
  •

For a list of approved backflow prevention devices see South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control

Review of fireline plans and inspection of fireline installations are an integral part of this program. The following procedure is used for approval of fireline plans and establishing a fireline account:

  • Submit three sets of hard copy plans or email PDF of plans to bfp@greenvillewater.com depicting general site plan (including detail of underground fireline piping) and one copy of inside sprinkler detail with material sheet.
  • GW reviews plans and may ask for revisions.
  • After approval, two sets are returned and marked “Approved.”
  • The facility owner must sign a fireline contract and pay the appropriate tap fees.
  • Fireline pit is inspected by GW.
  • Tap made by GW upon approval of fireline pit construction and piping.
