Phone Scammers, What You Need to Know

Attention: We wanted to share some information regarding a phone scam some of our customers may receive requesting payment. Please see below for details and our statement.

Scammers are impersonating Greenville Water employees in an effort to collect banking and credit card information.

Please understand Greenville Water will never initiate a call asking for banking or credit card information. The scam being perpetrated is an automated call to our Greenville County residents stating their water bill is delinquent and their service is going to be disconnected unless banking information is provided immediately.

Greenville Water will not call customers directly or use an automated system to request any payment be made to a customer account. We do send out automated calls reminding customers when their bill is due, but never asking for payment of any kind.

Some scam scenarios that customers may encounter include:

If the caller says your utility account is delinquent and threatens to shut off service immediately unless payment is made over the phone immediately.
If someone calls from a utility demanding immediate payment over the phone, via money transfer, prepaid debit cards or credit.
If the caller request banking or credit card information to make a “refund”.

We want our customers to be aware of potential scams and to be safe from impersonators.
