Greenville Water Partners with Conestee Nature Preserve to Provide Environmental Education, Outdoor Adventure AND GOATS!

Building upon a vibrant history of community partnership, Greenville Water is sponsoring and helping to organize several exciting opportunities for the public to engage with the natural world at Conestee Nature Preserve. With Greenville Water’s support, Conestee Nature Preserve will have offerings for both children and adults in the remaining months of 2021, including an opportunity to meet the furriest, cutest watershed managers around!

Afterschool Nature Discovery:

Conestee Nature Preserve is proud to offer a variety of well-established environmental education programs, including our Nature Discovery program. Nature Discovery is a hands-on afterschool adventure for elementary school students, during which our expert educators guide exploration of different areas around the Preserve. Topics range from worms to watersheds, steered by the imagination and curiosity of the students.

Greenville Water is presenting sponsor of the six Nature Discovery sessions that will take place during the fall semester (1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month). In addition to making these sessions financially viable, Greenville Water staff will be on hand to enhance the content of the sessions through their What Makes a Healthy Watershed game, and hands-on pH and chlorine testing.

Goats – the sustainable watershed managers:

During the October 7 session of Nature Discovery, special guests will be arriving at Conestee Nature Preserve, in the form of Greenville Water’s team of brush-clearing goats! These goats usually spend their day clearing invasive and undesirable plant species from the Greenville Water watersheds, but they will be taking a break for the afternoon to join Greenville Water staff in educating students about conservation and sustainability efforts in their watersheds. Your elementary schooler has “goat” to be there!

Saturday Sessions with a water focus:

Finally, Greenville Water is also participating in three Saturday events at the Preserve, including a nature hike (Nov. 13), a night hike (Oct. 23), and a rain barrel construction workshop (Oct. 9). These “Saturday Sessions” are part of a recurring series of offerings by Conestee Nature Preserve that occur twice per month and are generally open for all ages. With the help of Conestee and Greenville Water staff, participants can explore seldom-visited corners of the Preserve; enjoy a unique moonlit view of nature; or construct a sustainable and eco-friendly irrigation source.

Water is at the center of the missions of both Conestee Nature Preserve and Greenville Water, and the organizations are thrilled to engage the public around the importance of our local water resources!
